Official announcement from the Mountain West Conference or University of Hawaii
Hawaii to Join Mountain West as 8th Full Member in 2026, No Travel Subsidies
Oct 15, 2024, 01:34 PM
The University of Hawaii will transition from a football-only member to a full member of the Mountain West Conference (MWC) in 2026. This move will provide the MWC with the required eight full members to maintain its status as a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) league. The announcement was confirmed by Hawaii's athletic director, Craig Angelos, and it is expected to stabilize the conference for the foreseeable future. Notably, Hawaii will not incur travel subsidies as part of this transition. The Mountain West is also actively seeking additional football-only members, targeting Northern Illinois University (NIU) and the University of Toledo, while remaining open to adding basketball-only members as well. The addition of Hawaii marks a significant step for the MWC as it aims to solidify its membership and enhance its competitive landscape.
