Qatar Suspends Israel-Hamas Mediation, Says Hamas Office 'No Longer Serves Purpose'
Nov 9, 2024, 04:00 PM
On Saturday, Qatar announced it has suspended its mediation efforts between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza conflict, citing frustration over both parties' unwillingness to negotiate seriously toward a ceasefire and hostage release deal. A diplomatic source stated that Qatar informed Israel, Hamas, and the United States that, as long as there is a refusal to engage constructively, it cannot continue its mediating role. The Qatari Foreign Ministry confirmed that Qatar's mediation efforts are 'frozen.' Additionally, Qatar has warned Hamas that its political office in Doha 'no longer serves its purpose' and has decided to expel Hamas leaders from the country. Qatar indicated it would be willing to resume mediation if both sides demonstrate a sincere willingness to return to the negotiating table. This decision marks a significant shift, as Qatar has been a key mediator in negotiations and has hosted Hamas's leadership since 2012 at the request of the Obama administration. The development comes amid increased pressure from the United States for Qatar to take action against Hamas's leadership residing in Doha.
