Gukesh D Becomes Youngest World Chess Champion at 18, Defeats Ding Liren in Singapore
Dec 13, 2024, 09:25 AM
18-year-old Indian chess prodigy Gukesh D has become the youngest-ever and 18th World Chess Champion, defeating China's Ding Liren in a dramatic 14-game match held in Singapore. Gukesh, who became a grandmaster at age 12, surpasses Garry Kasparov's record as the youngest undisputed world champion in chess history. Despite the victory, he humbly stated, "Being the world champion doesn't mean I'm the best player in the world. Obviously, there's Magnus. I want to reach the level of greatness that Magnus has achieved." Gukesh refused to touch the trophy until the closing ceremony, showing respect for tradition. His mother, Padmakumari, was overwhelmed, saying she "couldn't believe it and cried for 10 minutes." Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced a cash prize of ₹5 crore to honor his accomplishment, adding to his winnings of over ₹11 crore. The championship win has sparked increased interest in chess in India, with Gukesh being mentored by mental coach Paddy Upton. Gukesh's next goal is to challenge Magnus Carlsen, aiming to "reach the level of greatness that Magnus has achieved."
