Google to Launch FireSat AI-Powered Satellites to Combat Wildfires

Europe experienced one of its worst years for wildfires in 2023, and 2024 has already seen almost double the average number of fires for this time of the year. In response, Google is funding an AI-powered satellite constellation, FireSat, which will begin launching next year. This satellite system, developed in collaboration with Moore and EDF, aims to deliver high-resolution and up-to-date images to help detect and fight wildfires before they grow out of control. The initiative, which includes a Google-backed controlled burn project, is part of a broader effort to leverage AI and satellite technology to prevent and manage wildfires effectively.
