Polls Show California's Prop 36 Poised to Pass, Reviving 'Three Strikes' Law
Oct 24, 2024, 05:28 PM
California's Proposition 36, a ballot measure aiming to increase punishments for thefts and drug offenses, is gaining support ahead of the upcoming election. The Washington Post has endorsed Prop 36, stating that "California has a golden opportunity to recalibrate on crime," and that it would give prosecutors leverage to push those struggling with addiction into treatment "who might otherwise resist." San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan has publicly supported the proposition, explaining how it could help solve the crime problem in California. The measure seeks to overhaul the 2014 law, Proposition 47, which reclassified some drug crimes and thefts under $950 from felonies to misdemeanors. Prop 36 is considered a modest reform of Prop 47 and is not a return to the war on drugs. The former San Francisco district attorney has deflected questions on the measure. Recent polls show that Prop 36 is poised to pass by a large margin, despite opposition from Governor Gavin Newsom, whose approval rating stands at 44% among California adults. The Los Angeles Times notes that "Three strikes is back on the ballot" with Proposition 36 and the district attorney race.
