France Detects First Case of Mpox Clade 1b in Brittany, Linked to Central Africa Contact
Jan 6, 2025, 09:55 PM
France has identified its first case of the new mpox variant, clade 1b, marking its initial detection in the country. The case was confirmed in Brittany, and the patient, a woman, has been diagnosed at the University Hospital of Rennes. She had not traveled to Central Africa, where the virus has been actively circulating, but had been in contact with two individuals who returned from the region. The French Ministry of Health has implemented recommended management measures and is conducting investigations to trace the origin of the infection and identify all contacts at risk. This variant has also been reported in Sweden, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Belgium since last summer. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) considers the risk of infection by clade 1 of mpox to the general population in France and Europe as low.
