Florida Unanimously Approves NIL Deals for High School Athletes Starting 2024–2025, Mandates Sports by Biological Sex
Jun 4, 2024, 02:21 PM
The Florida Board of Education has approved significant changes to the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) bylaws. These changes include the approval of sweeping Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals for high school athletes, allowing them to profit without forfeiting their eligibility to play starting in the 2024–2025 academic year. Florida becomes the 36th state to adopt NIL policies for high school sports, a move expected to have substantial influence given the state's prominence in high school athletics, including 41 of the nation's top prospects. Additionally, the board has mandated that sports be separated by biological sex, replacing the term 'gender' in the bylaws. Another consideration under review is allowing student-athletes who graduate early to continue playing sports. The legislation was unanimously passed by the FHSAA board of directors.
