U.S. Declassifies Nuclear Arsenal, Reveals 3,748 Warheads, 88% Reduction Since 1967
Jul 20, 2024, 09:40 AM
The United States has declassified the number of nuclear weapons in its arsenal, revealing that as of September 2023, the stockpile consisted of 3,748 warheads. This marks an 88% reduction from its peak of 31,255 warheads in 1967 and an 83% decrease from 22,217 warheads at the time of the Berlin Wall's fall. The declassification, announced by the National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) and detailed in a fact sheet by the Department of Energy, comes ahead of the NPT PREPCOM. The tally includes both active and inactive warheads. The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) has praised the Biden administration for restoring transparency in U.S. nuclear capabilities and urged other countries to follow suit.
