California Sues ExxonMobil Over Plastic Recycling Deception and Global Pollution
Sep 23, 2024, 03:36 PM
The state of California has filed a lawsuit against ExxonMobil, accusing the oil giant of misleading the public about the recyclability of plastics and contributing to global plastic pollution. California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced the lawsuit, which alleges that ExxonMobil engaged in a decades-long campaign of deception, promoting plastic recycling despite knowing it was not economically feasible. Environmental groups such as Surfrider, the Sierra Club, Heal the Bay, and San Francisco Baykeeper are also involved in the lawsuit, highlighting the significant environmental impact of plastic waste, including bottles, bags, and wrappers. The lawsuit comes ahead of global treaty talks that could cap plastic production.
