VisitScientists Discover Liquid Water 12 Miles Deep on Mars Using InSight Lander Data
Aug 12, 2024, 08:24 PM
Scientists have discovered vast reservoirs of liquid water beneath the surface of Mars, according to new research based on data from NASA's InSight lander. The water is located in the Martian crust, at depths of about six to 12 miles (10 to 20 kilometers), and is believed to be enough to form a global ocean. The presence of these reservoirs, which are buried under layers of ice, offers new hope for the possibility of life on Mars, although the inaccessibility of the water makes it challenging to study directly with current technology. This discovery was made possible through the analysis of seismic data and computer modeling, which suggest that the water exists in tiny cracks and pores within the Martian rocks. Scientists indicate that the reservoirs contain an ocean's worth of water, found 12 miles beneath the surface.
