Wildfires Near Athens: One Dead, 700 Firefighters Battle Blazes Amid Record Heat
Aug 12, 2024, 09:56 PM
Greece is grappling with a severe wildfire crisis, with fires raging near Athens and forcing the evacuation of thousands of residents. The fires, fueled by hot and windy weather, have reached the suburbs of Athens, causing widespread damage, including the destruction of homes, schools, and hospitals. At least one person has died, and more than 35 people have been injured. The historic town of Marathon is among the areas affected. The Greek government has sought assistance from the European Union, with several countries sending firefighters to help combat the blazes. The fires have been exacerbated by Greece's hottest summer on record, with temperatures soaring above 40°C. Nearly 700 firefighters are working tirelessly to contain the flames, which have reached heights of 80 feet, but the situation remains critical. At least 11 towns have been evacuated.
