European Parliament Calls for International Arrest Warrant for Maduro, Recognizes Gonzalez as Venezuela's Legitimate President
Sep 20, 2024, 01:18 PM
The European Parliament has called for an international arrest warrant for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and has recognized exiled opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as the legitimate president of Venezuela. This decision follows allegations that Gonzalez was coerced into signing a letter accepting Maduro's victory in the July 28th election, in exchange for guarantees that his family would not be harmed. Gonzalez, who received 8 million votes, fled to Spain after being warned by a security official that Maduro's forces were coming for him. Spain has denied any involvement in the negotiations between Gonzalez and Maduro. The Venezuelan government has condemned the European Parliament's resolution, calling it interference in the country's sovereignty. The president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodriguez, presented evidence that Gonzalez left Venezuela voluntarily.
