France Identifies First Case of New Mpox Variant Clade 1b in Woman from Brittany at CHU de Rennes
Jan 6, 2025, 09:55 PM
France has identified its first case of the new mpox variant, clade 1b, in the Brittany region. The patient, a woman, had not traveled to Central Africa but was in contact with two individuals who had returned from the region. She was diagnosed at the CHU de Rennes. The French Ministry of Health has implemented recommended management measures and is conducting investigations to trace the source of the infection and identify all contacts. The clade 1b variant has previously been reported in Sweden, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Belgium. The risk of infection for the general population in France and Europe is considered low by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), although sporadic cases linked to areas with intense viral circulation can occur.
