Study Reveals Ecballium elaterium Launches Seeds Over 10 Meters in 30 Milliseconds, Up to 40 Feet
Nov 25, 2024, 08:47 PM
A recent study has revealed the unique seed dispersal mechanism of the squirting cucumber, scientifically known as Ecballium elaterium. This plant is capable of launching its seeds at high speed, ejecting them over 10 meters (approximately 33 feet) from the parent plant. The process occurs within just 30 milliseconds, utilizing a high-pressure jet of mucus to propel the seeds. Remarkably, the squirting cucumber can shoot its seeds up to 40 feet, which is more than 2,000 times its own length. This phenomenon was captured in a video recorded at 8,600 frames per second, showcasing the intricate mechanics behind this explosive seed dispersal method. The study highlights the squirting cucumber's distinct adaptation compared to other plants that typically rely on external forces for seed distribution.
