Texas AG Paxton Sues Dr. May Lau for Providing Gender Transition Treatments to 21 Minors
Oct 17, 2024, 06:42 PM
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against Dr. May C. Lau, a pediatrician at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and a consultant to the Texas Medical Association's committee on Child and Adolescent Health, alleging that she violated state law by providing prohibited gender transition treatments to minors. According to the lawsuit, Dr. Lau prescribed testosterone to at least 21 girls under the age of 18, contrary to Senate Bill 14, which bans such treatments for minors in Texas. The law, which took effect in September 2023 and was upheld by the Texas Supreme Court in June 2024, prohibits medical professionals from administering puberty blockers, hormones, or surgeries for the purpose of gender transitioning in children. The lawsuit also alleges that Dr. Lau misled pharmacies, insurance providers, and possibly patients by representing that her testosterone prescriptions were for purposes other than transitioning a child's biological sex. This legal action is reportedly the first of its kind under the new law.
