Supreme Court, in 5-4 Decision, Rejects Trump's Bid to Delay Friday Sentencing in Hush Money Case
Jan 10, 2025, 12:18 AM
Donald Trump's efforts to delay his sentencing in his New York criminal hush money case have been rejected by both the New York Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court. On Thursday, the Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, denied Trump's emergency request to halt the sentencing, which is scheduled for Friday at 9:30 a.m. ET. The denial follows the New York Court of Appeals' rejection of Trump's bid to postpone the sentencing, in which he argued for immunity as president-elect. Trump was convicted in May on 34 counts of falsifying business records stemming from hush money payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. The sentencing will proceed before Judge Juan Merchan in New York, just days before Trump's inauguration on January 20th. Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh dissented, while Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett joined the liberal justices in the majority.
