Cuba Faces Nationwide Blackout After Antonio Guiteras CTE Failure Amid Severe Energy Crisis
Oct 18, 2024, 04:54 PM
Cuba is experiencing a severe energy crisis, resulting in a nationwide blackout after the failure of the Antonio Guiteras CTE power plant. The island's electrical grid was completely shut down, leaving millions without electricity. Prime Minister Manuel Marrero has implemented emergency measures, including the closure of non-essential state workplaces and schools, to manage the crisis. The Ministry of Energy and Mines reported that the country's power generation capacity is significantly lower than the demand, with only 1,692 megawatts available compared to a 3,300-megawatt demand. Additionally, more than a million homes are without running water due to the crisis.
