Veteran CPI(M) Leader Sitaram Yechury Passes Away at 72 After Prolonged Illness

Veteran CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury has passed away at the age of 72 after battling a prolonged illness. Yechury, who was the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and a former Rajya Sabha MP, was undergoing treatment at AIIMS in New Delhi for an acute respiratory tract infection and pneumonia. He was admitted to the Emergency Ward of AIIMS on August 19 and later shifted to the Intensive Care Unit. On September 11, his condition was reported as critical but stable. Yechury, a prominent figure in Indian politics, began his political career as a student leader at Jawaharlal Nehru University and became the CPI(M) chief in 2015. His death marks the end of a significant era in Indian leftist politics.
