On Veterans Day, Gov. Wes Moore Posthumously Promotes Harriet Tubman to Brigadier General
Nov 12, 2024, 12:00 AM
Harriet Tubman, the revered abolitionist and Underground Railroad conductor, was posthumously promoted to the rank of brigadier general in the Maryland Army National Guard in a Veterans Day ceremony. Maryland Governor Wes Moore and the Maryland National Guard awarded Tubman the one-star general rank to honor her military service during the Civil War, recognizing her as the first woman to oversee an American military action during a time of war. "Today, we celebrate a soldier and a person who earned the title of veteran," Governor Moore said at the ceremony attended by dozens at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park in Dorchester County, Maryland. This designation follows recent legislation passed by the Maryland General Assembly allowing posthumous military commissions.
