Starting Monday, June 10, 2024, it is mandatory for all cats in England aged 20 weeks and older to be microchipped and registered on a database. The new law aims to ensure that lost or abandoned cats can be reunited with their owners more easily. Cat owners who fail to comply with this requirement could face fines of up to £500. The cost of microchipping a cat ranges between £10 and £30. Alice Potter, a cat welfare expert from the RSPCA, explained that the legislation is largely to ensure that as many cats as possible are reunited with their owners. This legislation aligns with existing rules for dogs, which already require microchipping.
