Utah Secures 200,000 Acre-Feet Water Donation from Compass Minerals for Great Salt Lake Preservation
Sep 3, 2024, 06:51 PM
The Great Salt Lake, which has experienced a long, steady decline over the last two decades due to drought and water diversion from new housing developments, farms, and industries, is set to receive a significant boost. Utah Governor Spencer Cox announced a landmark water donation agreement involving the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands (FFSL) and Compass Minerals. This agreement, which marks the first voluntary agreement between FFSL and a private company, includes a donation of 200,000 acre-feet of water and land to aid in the preservation of the Great Salt Lake. The lake is a part of Utah's history, heritage, and identity, and this deal is considered a major milestone.
