Columbia University Refuses Israel Divestment, Sets 2 PM Monday Deadline for Protesters
Apr 29, 2024, 08:41 PM
Columbia University has decided not to divest from Israel, despite demands from student protesters who have set up a pro-Palestinian encampment on campus. The university's president, Minouche Shafik, announced the decision following unsuccessful negotiations with student organizers. In response, the university has issued an ultimatum to the protesters: vacate the encampment by 2 PM on Monday or face suspension and disciplinary actions, including ineligibility to finish the semester in good standing. The university has also threatened mass suspensions and disciplinary probation until June 2025 for those who do not comply. Additionally, Columbia faculty members have shown solidarity by forming a human chain at the entrance to the encampment.
