German Naval Vessels FGS Baden-Württemberg and FGS Frankfurt am Main Sail Through Taiwan Strait, Confront Chinese Threats
Sep 13, 2024, 09:45 AM
Two German naval vessels, the frigate FGS Baden-Württemberg and the supply ship FGS Frankfurt am Main, have sailed through the Taiwan Strait en route from South Korea to the Philippines. This move is seen as a demonstration of Berlin's commitment to confronting Chinese threats, which now extend to Europe. The German Defense Ministry has stated that the timing of the passage was chosen based on suitable weather conditions, and under maritime law, no formal notification to Beijing was required. The German Foreign Ministry emphasized that the passage is considered normal and does not necessitate prior notification. This action has sparked tensions as China claims sovereignty over the Taiwan Strait, while Germany views it as international waters. The German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius reiterated that international waters are for free passage. The German mission also included surveillance activities against illicit maritime activities by North Korea. Germany adheres to the 'One China Policy'.
