China's population declined for the third consecutive year in 2024, reaching 1.40828 billion by the end of the year, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The population decreased by 1.39 million from the end of 2023. The number of births in 2024 was reported at 9.54 million, an increase from the 9.02 million births in 2023, while the number of deaths stood at 10.93 million. This marks the first time since the founding of the People's Republic of China that the population has decreased for three consecutive years, highlighting the ongoing trend of aging and declining birth rates in the country.
