Charaideo Moidams of Ahom Dynasty in Assam Inscribed as India's 43rd UNESCO World Heritage Site
Jul 26, 2024, 08:54 AM
India's Charaideo Moidams, the mound-burial system of the Ahom Dynasty in Assam, has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as India's 43rd entry. This marks the first time a site from the North East has received this recognition under the Cultural Property category. The Moidams, which date back nearly 700 years, are hollow vaults made of brick, stone, or earth that contain the remains of Ahom kings and queens. The announcement was made during the 46th World Heritage Committee meeting held in New Delhi on July 26. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed immense pride and joy over this achievement, highlighting the cultural significance and reverence for ancestors embodied by the Moidams. Culture Minister Shekhawat also emphasized the importance of this recognition.
