Gold Pocket Watch Given to Captain Who Rescued 705 Titanic Survivors Sells for Record $2 Million
Nov 17, 2024, 03:17 PM
A gold pocket watch given to Captain Arthur Rostron, who commanded the RMS Carpathia during the rescue of 705 Titanic survivors, has sold at auction for a record price of nearly $2 million. The 18-karat Tiffany pocket watch was presented to Rostron by three widows of Titanic victims in recognition of his heroic efforts. Auctioneers Henry Aldridge and Son sold the watch to a private U.S. collector on Saturday, achieving the highest price ever paid for a piece of Titanic memorabilia. The watch's sale far exceeded its estimated value of £151,000 ($190,000), ultimately fetching £1.56 million ($1.97 million).
