Canada Soccer Staff Sent Home After Two Drone Spying Incidents on New Zealand Team at Paris 2024
Jul 24, 2024, 08:31 AM
The New Zealand women's soccer team has accused Canada Soccer of using a drone to spy on their practice sessions ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics. The incident occurred on two separate occasions, July 19 and July 22, in St. Étienne, leading to an official complaint lodged with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). French authorities detained a non-accredited member of the Canadian support staff, identified as Joseph Lombardi, an analyst. Jasmine Mander, an assistant coach, was also implicated. The Canadian Olympic Committee has issued a heartfelt apology and is reviewing the next steps with the IOC, Canada Soccer, and FIFA. As a result, both Lombardi and Mander have been sent home, and head coach Bev Priestman will not coach the opening match against New Zealand. Sanctions against those involved are expected soon.
