A recent study conducted in Ontario, Canada, has found a significant correlation between hallucinogen use and an increased risk of developing schizophrenia. The research analyzed data from over 9.2 million individuals and revealed that those who visited emergency departments (EDs) due to hallucinogen use faced a 21-fold higher risk of developing schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) compared to the general population and individuals who sought treatment for other substances. Additionally, psilocybin-assisted therapy has been identified as potentially beneficial for up to 5.6 million Americans suffering from major depressive disorder (MDD) or treatment-resistant depression (TRD), highlighting the growing interest in psychedelics for mental health treatment.
