May 27, 2024, 05:52 PM
Bill Walton, the Hall of Fame NBA center and celebrated broadcaster, has died at the age of 71 following a prolonged battle with prostate cancer. Walton, known for his eccentric personality and significant contributions to basketball, won two NBA championships, one with the Portland Trail Blazers in 1977 and another with the Boston Celtics in 1986. He also had a storied college career at UCLA, leading the team to two NCAA championships. Walton's impact extended beyond the court as he became a beloved commentator and advocate for the sport, and a vocal Grateful Dead superfan. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver praised Walton, stating, 'Bill Walton was truly one of a kind. As a Hall of Fame player, he redefined the center position.' Walton was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993. He was surrounded by his family at the time of his passing.
