Biden Deploys 1,000 Active-Duty Troops to Aid North Carolina's Hurricane Helene Recovery
Oct 2, 2024, 03:24 PM
President Joe Biden has directed the Department of Defense to deploy up to 1,000 active-duty troops to North Carolina to aid in recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene. This move is in response to a request from FEMA and aims to support the North Carolina National Guard in delivering supplies, food, and water to isolated communities. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin confirmed that over 6,300 National Guard members from more than 12 states have already been mobilized to assist with disaster relief, rescue, and recovery operations. Initially, more than 5,500 National Guardsmen from 11 states were involved in the response missions. Biden is also planning a trip to survey the storm's damage firsthand.
