Australia Plans Mandatory Guardrails for High-Risk AI Tools with Focus on Human Oversight and Transparency
Sep 5, 2024, 03:00 AM
Australia's center-left government is planning to introduce mandatory guardrails for the highest-risk artificial intelligence (AI) tools. The proposed regulations will focus on human oversight and transparency, amid a rapid rollout of AI tools by businesses and in everyday life. Industry Minister Ed Husic has introduced 10 voluntary guidelines, with consultations underway to shape future policy. A recent survey revealed that a third of businesses using AI are not disclosing it to customers or staff. The government is considering an Artificial Intelligence Act to enforce these measures. Labor is also considering a non-legally binding framework to help shape future policy.
