U.S. Department of Energy Announces $2.2 Billion Investment to Upgrade National Power Grid, Adding 13 GW of Green Energy
Aug 6, 2024, 12:12 PM
The U.S. Department of Energy has announced a $2.2 billion investment to revamp the national power grid. This initiative aims to protect against extreme weather, lower costs, and prepare for growing energy demand. The funding will support eight projects across 18 states, creating at least 5,000 good-paying jobs and upgrading more than 1,000 miles of transmission. A significant portion of the investment will focus on green energy, including the addition of 13 GW of clean power. The projects also include an ambitious east-to-west HVDC connector, offshore wind power terminals in New England, and advanced reconductoring in California, Utah, and Virginia. Additionally, $700 million from the Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnership Grant will be used, with support from the North Plains Connector Interregional Innovation Consortium.
