Aryna Sabalenka Advances to French Open Round of 16 with 7-5, 6-1 Win Over Paula Badosa
Jun 1, 2024, 01:01 PM
Aryna Sabalenka has advanced to the fourth round of the French Open after defeating her best friend Paula Badosa 7-5, 6-1. This victory marks Sabalenka's seventh consecutive major where she has reached at least the last 16. Sabalenka, currently ranked world No. 2, has now won 10 of the last 11 games against Badosa and remains undefeated in Grand Slams in 2024 with a 20-0 set record. This win also makes her the first player to claim three wins over Badosa at WTA events in a calendar year, having previously beaten her in Miami and Stuttgart. Additionally, this is the first time since 2013 that the top four seeds in the Women’s Singles, including Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina, have reached the round of 16 at Roland Garros. Badosa, a former world No. 2, showed resilience despite dealing with a chronic injury and will continue to compete in mixed doubles with Stefanos Tsitsipas.
