Supreme Court Grants Bail to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal in Excise Policy Case, Sets ₹10 Lakh Bond
Sep 13, 2024, 06:00 AM
The Supreme Court of India has granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the alleged excise policy corruption case. Kejriwal, who has been in jail for the past six months, was granted bail with several conditions, including that he cannot visit the Delhi Secretariat, sign official files, or make public comments about the case. The court criticized the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for unjustly prolonging his detention, describing it as an unjust deprivation of liberty. Justice Ujjal Bhuyan questioned the timing of Kejriwal's arrest, suggesting it was intended to frustrate his bail in a related Enforcement Directorate (ED) case. The decision has been met with celebrations from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and its supporters, who view it as a victory for truth and justice. However, the court maintained that Kejriwal's arrest was legal, although there were split views on the matter. The bail bond was set at ₹10 lakh. The BJP has called for Kejriwal's resignation, arguing that the bail conditions indicate his involvement in the corruption case.
