Apple to Open iPhone Tap-and-Go Payments to Rivals in EU
Jul 11, 2024, 02:20 PM
Apple has announced that it will provide European developers with the option to enable tap-and-go payments for car keys, closed loop transit, and merchant loyalty/rewards from within iOS apps. This move will grant access to the Near Field Communication (NFC) functionality on iPhones for payments in stores and address alleged refusals of access to Apple Pay in the European Union. As a result, iPhone users in Europe will no longer be restricted to using Apple Pay for mobile payments, allowing rival digital wallets and tap-and-go systems to operate on iPhones. Apple has pledged to open its 'tap and go' technology to competitors, marking a significant shift in its mobile payment strategy in the EU.
