Sep 22, 2024, 05:30 AM
Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the Marxist-leaning leader of Sri Lanka's National People's Power (NPP) party and the JVP’s broader front, has taken a convincing early lead in the country's presidential election. Dissanayake, who has pledged to fight corruption and address the economic crisis, is leading with 56% of postal votes from seven electoral districts. His two main opponents each trail with 19%. The election, which features 38 candidates, is seen as a potential historic win for Dissanayake. Analysts predict he may secure over 50% of the vote. On Sunday, he consolidated his lead.
