Russia's Roskomnadzor Bans Discord, First Blocked Western Platform
Oct 8, 2024, 03:40 PM
Russia has officially banned the instant messaging platform Discord for violating local laws. The ban, announced by the country's communications regulator Roskomnadzor, was imposed due to the platform's failure to remove nearly 1,000 items of 'illegal' content flagged by authorities. Discord users in Russia have reported difficulties accessing the service, with some finding it only accessible via VPN. According to Downdetector, there are widespread issues with both the application and web version of Discord. This move follows similar actions taken against other foreign tech platforms by the Russian government. Discord became the first blocked Western social platform in Russia.
