The Guardian Exits X, Calling Platform 'Toxic' and Criticizing Elon Musk's Influence
Nov 13, 2024, 12:32 PM
The Guardian newspaper has announced that it will no longer post content on its official accounts on X (formerly Twitter), citing concerns over 'often disturbing content' found on the platform, including 'far-right conspiracy theories and racism'. The publication described X as a 'toxic media platform' and stated that 'the benefits of being on X are now outweighed by the negatives' and resources could be better used promoting their journalism elsewhere. The Guardian also criticized owner Elon Musk for using the platform's influence to 'shape political discourse', particularly highlighting the US presidential election campaign as a factor reinforcing their decision. While the Guardian will stop posting from its official accounts, users on X can still share its articles, and its journalists will continue to use the platform for news gathering and may occasionally embed content from X in their articles.
