Teamsters Lead Nearly 10,000 Amazon Workers in Largest U.S. Strike Ahead of Christmas
Dec 20, 2024, 01:02 AM
Nearly 10,000 Amazon workers across seven U.S. facilities have gone on strike during the peak holiday shopping season, demanding union recognition, higher wages, improved working conditions, and an end to union busting. Led by the Teamsters union, the strike began at 6 a.m. on Thursday, less than a week before Christmas, at locations including Southern California facilities DFX4, DAX5, and DAX8; New York City's DBK4; Atlanta's DGT8; Skokie, Illinois; and San Francisco's DCK6. The union describes the action as the largest strike against Amazon in U.S. history. The strike was called after Amazon failed to meet a December 15 deadline set by the union for contract negotiations. Amazon states that it does not anticipate the strike to impact holiday deliveries, noting that the striking workers represent less than 1% of its workforce. Politicians such as U.S. Representatives Jerry Nadler, Nikki Budzinski, John Garamendi, Pramila Jayapal, and Senator Tammy Duckworth have expressed support for the strikers and urged Amazon to negotiate with the union.
