Amazon Leads $500 Million Investment in X-Energy for SMRs to Power AI, Targets 5GW Nuclear Power by 2039
Oct 16, 2024, 12:49 PM
Amazon has signed agreements to support the development of innovative nuclear energy projects, making a historic investment to address its growing energy demands driven by AI workloads. The company is investing in X-Energy, leading a $500 million funding round to develop small modular reactors (SMRs) to power AI operations. Amazon plans to work with Dominion Energy to develop an SMR project at an existing nuclear plant in Virginia and is also funding a feasibility study for an SMR project near Energy Northwest's site in Washington State. The agreements include the construction of several new SMRs, with the goal to bring more than 5 gigawatts of SMR power online in the U.S. by 2039. This move aims to secure carbon-free energy sources to power Amazon's data centers and AI processing.
