VisitNYC to Implement On-Street Trash Bins with $7M Contenur Contract by November
Aug 7, 2024, 06:35 PM
New York City is implementing a new initiative to address its waste management issues by introducing on-street trash bins. The city has signed a $7 million contract with Spanish company Contenur to supply the first batch of Barcelona-style trash bins, which are set to arrive in Manhattan next spring. This program, led by the Department of Sanitation of New York (DSNY), aims to repurpose a small fraction of free parking space for this vital city service. The bins will initially be required for all residential buildings with 1-9 units starting in November. This initiative marks a shift from using trash bags on sidewalks to containerized trash management, a move that has been supported by a $4 million consultancy from McKinsey, which concluded that bins are more effective than bags.
