Elon Musk Confirms Neuralink's Second Human Implant, Aims for 10 Devices and Pro Gamer Performance
Aug 2, 2024, 08:59 PM
Elon Musk has confirmed Neuralink's second human implant during a podcast with Lex Fridman, marking another significant milestone in the company's brain-machine interface technology development. Musk stated that the first human Neuralink implant surgery was successful, with about 400 electrodes providing signals. He added that the company aims to have a high single-digit number of patients by the end of this year, pending regulatory approvals, and within a few years, they aim to reach thousands. Musk also highlighted the potential of Neuralink to dramatically increase the number of electrodes and improve signal processing, which could enable communication speeds vastly faster than current human capabilities. He mentioned that in five years, Neuralink could reach megabit speeds. Neuralink already enables communication at a world record 8 bits per second. Musk emphasized the long-term aspiration of Neuralink to improve AI-human symbiosis by increasing the bandwidth of communication. He also noted that within a year or two, someone with a Neuralink implant will be able to outperform a pro gamer due to faster reaction times. The company hopes to have 10 devices in patients by the end of this year.
