Premier League Clubs to Vote on Abolishing VAR Next Season After Wolves' Proposal
May 15, 2024, 05:29 PM
Premier League clubs are set to vote on a proposal to abolish the video assistant referee (VAR) system from the start of the next season. The proposal was formally submitted by Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) and will be on the agenda at the league's annual general meeting on June 6. For the rule change to pass, it requires a two-thirds majority, meaning 14 out of the 20 clubs must support the motion. Wolves have outlined several reasons for their proposal, including the impact on goal celebrations, frustration and confusion in stadiums due to lengthy VAR checks, and the erosion of trust in the system. The Premier League has opposed the abolition, highlighting an increase in correct decisions from 82% to 96% since the implementation of VAR.
