Israeli Cabinet Approves IDF Deployment in Philadelphi Corridor Amid Gallant's Opposition, Hamas Rejection
Aug 30, 2024, 03:30 AM
The Israeli security cabinet has approved maps determining the Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) deployment in the Philadelphi corridor, a strategic area along the Gaza-Egypt border, also referred to as the Philadelphi axis. This decision is part of ongoing negotiations for a possible hostage release and ceasefire deal with Hamas. The maps, drawn by the IDF, were supported by eight ministers in the security cabinet, while Defense Minister Yoav Gallant voted against the proposal. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir abstained from the vote. Despite the approval, there are concerns about the necessity of maintaining a military presence in the corridor, as some officials argue it is not required. Netanyahu's insistence on the corridor is seen as political posturing, with tunnels located tens of meters underneath the corridor. Hamas has expressed its rejection of any Israeli presence in the area.
