Georgia Governor Signs Executive Order Allowing Direct NIL Payments to Athletes
Sep 17, 2024, 05:20 PM
On September 17, 2024, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed an executive order allowing state schools to directly compensate athletes for their name, image, and likeness (NIL). The order prohibits the NCAA or any conference from taking adverse action against Georgia schools for facilitating or offering NIL compensation. This move enables programs such as the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech to pay players directly for their NIL. The executive order is in effect until a federal NIL law is passed or a settlement is reached. Georgia Tech AD J Batt and Georgia AD Josh Brooks expressed gratitude for Kemp's leadership, noting the order provides necessary tools in the absence of nationwide NIL regulation.
