Fatah and Hamas Agree in Cairo Talks to Form Joint Committee to Govern Post-War Gaza
Dec 3, 2024, 09:46 AM
Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah have agreed to form a joint committee to administer the Gaza Strip after the end of the ongoing war with Israel, according to negotiators from both sides. The agreement was reached during talks in Cairo mediated by Egyptian General Intelligence chief, Minister Hassan Rashad. The proposed committee, composed of 10 to 15 non-partisan individuals, will oversee areas such as economy, education, health, humanitarian aid, and reconstruction efforts. This development is seen as paving the way for a potential ceasefire. Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry stated that the discussions aim to enable the Palestinian Authority to fully assume control of Gaza once the Israeli occupation ends. Both parties have reportedly resolved previous disagreements over the management of relief and reconstruction funds. The agreement requires final approval from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
