Pentagon Fails Seventh Audit but Cites Progress Toward Clean Audit of $824 Billion Budget by 2028
Nov 16, 2024, 06:29 PM
The Pentagon has failed its seventh consecutive audit, unable to fully account for its $824 billion budget. The Department of Defense has never passed an audit since audits became mandatory in 2018. The latest audit, costing $178 million and involving approximately 1,700 auditors, revealed that out of the department's agencies, nine earned clean opinions, while fifteen received disclaimers, with others pending. Officials noted significant progress, stating that 82% of the department's funds are now free of major accounting errors, a substantial improvement from just 7% in 2021. Despite the repeated failures, officials maintain that the Pentagon is on track to achieve a clean audit by 2028.
