India Approves 1 GW Offshore Wind Projects in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu

The Indian government has approved the country's first offshore wind energy projects, marking a significant step towards enhancing renewable energy capacity. The Union Cabinet has sanctioned a Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme for the implementation of these projects, with a total outlay of Rs 7,453 crore. The projects, each with a capacity of 500 MW, will be located off the coasts of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, collectively contributing 1 GW to India's renewable energy portfolio. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the landmark nature of this decision, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the potential benefits, including reduced CO2 emissions and job creation.
