Possible Coup in Damascus Targets Assad as Republican Guard Clashes with Maher al-Assad's Forces
Nov 30, 2024, 06:03 PM
Reports are emerging of a potential military coup attempt in Damascus, Syria, targeting President Bashar al-Assad's regime. Intense gunfire has been heard across the city, including near the presidential palace, the Armed Forces Headquarters, and the Kafr Sousa area. Clashes have reportedly erupted between the Republican Guard and the Fourth Division, led by Maher al-Assad. Opposition media claims that the Republican Guard is attempting to seize power. Additionally, former armed opposition factions in southern Syria, particularly in Daraa, are reportedly staging demonstrations and may take up arms. State media broadcasts have been disrupted, with reports that state TV has stopped broadcasting. Unverified reports also suggest that Bashar al-Assad is currently in Moscow, and intelligence officer Hussam Luka and his allies may be involved in the coup. Clashes have also been reported near the Four Seasons hotel.
