Brazil's Transport Minister Announces R$ 100 Million Reconstruction of Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge After Two Fatalities, Completion by 2025
Dec 23, 2024, 05:46 PM
Renan Filho, the Minister of Transport, conducted a technical inspection of the Juscelino Kubitschek bridge, which partially collapsed on December 22, 2024, connecting the states of Maranhão and Tocantins. Accompanied by Maranhão Governor Carlos Brandão, Filho announced a federal emergency decree and a commitment to reconstruct the bridge, estimating costs between R$ 100 million and R$ 150 million. The new structure is expected to be completed by 2025. Following the incident, which resulted in at least two fatalities, Filho stated that a federal investigation will be initiated to determine accountability for the bridge's condition, which had been reported as poor by the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (Dnit) since at least 2019.
